Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) is a photovoltaic material used to replace traditional building materials in parts of the building envelope such as roofs, skylights or facades. They are increasingly being incorporated into the construction of new buildings as a primary or secondary source of electricity, although existing buildings may be retrofitted with similar technology.
The advantage of integrated PV compared to more common non-integrated systems is that the initial cost can be offset by reducing the construction materials and labor typically used to construct the parts of the building that BIPV modules replace. These advantages make BIPV one of the fastest growing segments of the PV industry
Photovoltaic applications for buildings began to appear in the 1970s. Aluminum framed PV modules are attached or installed on buildings that are often located in remote areas and do not have access to the grid. In the 1980s, photovoltaic module attachments on roofs began to be shown. These photovoltaic systems are usually installed on buildings with utility grid connections in centralized power station areas.
